This cabochon of Mary Ellen Jasper has beautiful patterns. Mary Ellen Jasper is fossilized stromatolites, stony algae that built up layers on reefs. It is one of the earliest forms of life, at over 2 billion years old. Mary Ellen is a very striking rock with intense colors of orange, red with black, hematite. It gets its name from the Mary Ellen Mine in St. Louis County, Minnesota where it was discovered. It was named after the miners girlfriend!
